Building A Team
Increasing Participation & Building A Team
We want to create a culture that students and athletes want to be a part of. That takes place by following through with our Pillars and Character Education program. I want student athletes to know that the coaches care about making them the best man they can be. By having coaches that are transformational rather than transactional athletes will want to participate in our program. It is important to me that football and all sports for that matter are fun. If kids are not having fun then they will not want to play. Our job as coaches is to make it fun but to also make it competitive. We will pride ourselves on the wins we get off the scoreboard. My goal is to help these athletes be the best person they can be, and that to me is what coaching is all about. Building relationships, showing them you care, teaching them character and leadership traits, and making it fun will all be beneficial to increasing participation. There is something to be said for going through hard and uncomfortable times (like off season) together and how that bonds people.
Team Building
Football is the ultimate team game. It truly takes all 11 players working together on the same page to be successful. In order for a football team to develop unity you have to practice it. We will have times throughout the year that will be set aside for team building activities. We will have activities that require athletes to work together for a common goal. We will also host events such as team meals, or movie night to allow kids to get to know each other better.
Accountability Teams
One way that athletes will be able to build relationships and work together as a team is by our Accountability teams. Captains for the teams will be selected by coaches and the captains will select their teams. These teams will be awarded/deducted points based on grades, attendance, discipline, workouts, community service, leadership and volunteering. This allows us to work together in a smaller team setting that accelerates the growth of relationships. Accountability teams will meet weekly with their mentor coach to discuss their progress in the above mentioned categories. During these meetings coaches and athletes will discuss a character trait and how they can apply it during the week. We will utilize this time to discuss things that are not football related like our favorite memories or greatest fears, etc. Being able to take time and get to know each other will allow our bonds as a team to grow stronger.
